Beverly Farm

1897-today

1897

Dr. William H.C. Smith and wife, Elizabeth purchase land in Godfrey, Illinois and found Beverly Farm.

1904

Dr. Smith receives Gold Medal at World’s Fair for pioneering concepts in the care of mentally retarded.

1909

Recognition for their innovative approach fuels growth. By now there are 171 residents and over 1,200 applications from every state and nine foreign countries.

1928

Dr. Smith dies and his son, Dr. Groves B. Smith assumes leadership and expands Beverly Farm to accommodate more residents.

1958

Families of residents form a non-profit organization and buy Beverly Farm. Dr. Smith continues to serve as medical director.

1977

Dr. Groves B. Smith dies after
50 years of service to Beverly Farm.

1979

Beverly Farm changes focus to providing adult services only.

Beverly Farm is a comfortable and safe home for adults with developmental disabilities who live, work, and have fun together in a planned community environment.
